MENA Climate Change Facility
The MENA Climate Finance Facility would be established by UNDP, UNEP-FI and regional partners, providing technical assistance to help member countries in the region assess their needs for scaled-up climate finance, help design and generate new country projects to gear climate actions towards broader SDG targets, and to support innovative finance instruments and partnerships that synergize new global finance opportunities with countries’ SDG actions.
A Preparatory Phase would be launched by UNDP and UNEP-FI over 18 months (2017- 2018) focused on initial design and partnership building activities with countries and private partners. This would require initial seed funding ($300,000) from public or private donors to be identified, with activities to be implemented under UNDPs ongoing Arab Climate Resilience Initiative (ACRI). A small team will be recruited under the Preparatory Phase to achieve the two main outputs noted above and lead the design of the longer-term second phase. Contributions to the preparatory phase by interested donors will have a leveraging effect, resulting in a second phase 2018-2022 when the Facility would be fully operational and with funding from a broader group of partners keen on playing their part in the regional development agenda and the goal of supporting the path to a climate-resilient future.
