Introduction
Geothermal resources are used in 2 main ways:
- high heat resources are tapped for heat directly or water is injected into the earth to produce super-heated steam which drives turbines to create electricity.
- low heat resrouces or the differential between the earths crust and atmosphere can be used for cooling and/or heating by using ground loops. These systems are built at domestic residence or commercial building scale.
The hotter resources for power generation tend to be found in areas where there is volcanic activity. Geothermal resources like these are not strongly evident in the middle east although potentially exist along the coasts of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
Lower temperature resources are more prevalent here and could be exploited for heating or cooling via absorption chillers.
