A large part of MENA falls within the so-called ‘sun belt’, which benefits from the most energy-intensive sunlight on the globe (in terms of both heat and light). There is also abundant unproductive desert lands suitable for locating large solar projects.
The hotter resources for power generation tend to be found in areas where there is volcanic activity. Geothermal resources like these are not strongly evident in the middle east although potentially exist along the coasts of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
